Rainy-Day Seoul: Indoor Alternatives by Area

Choose one area for the wet part of the day

A rainy-day plan works best when the main attraction is indoors and the journey is simple. Start with the area you were already going to visit, then choose the museum or attraction that interests you. The three options below are alternatives: combining all three would turn the day into a series of cross-city journeys.

These are plans assembled from official visitor information. They have not been tested as continuous sheltered walking routes. Carry rain protection for entrances and street connections even when the main attraction is indoors.

Palace area: National Palace Museum or MMCA Seoul

National Palace Museum of Korea preserves the theme of a palace day. Its displays cover royal life, court rituals, and scientific achievements, giving context to the buildings at Gyeongbokgung. Admission is free. The museum is at 12 Hyoja-ro, beside the palace entrance area; its official directions include Gyeongbokgung Station on Line 3, Exit 5.

It opens at 09:30, with ordinary closing at 17:30 and last entry at 17:00. It has later Saturday and Culture Day hours. It closes on January 1, Lunar New Year’s Day, Chuseok, and the last Monday of each month; a public holiday can move that monthly closure. MMCA Seoul, at 30 Samcheong-ro, is the alternative for contemporary art. Choose it based on the current exhibition program rather than assuming every room is included in one free visit. The English visitor page lists exhibition-specific prices and a KRW 10,000 all-pass ticket when three or more paid exhibitions operate. Some exhibitions have their own booking or time-slot conditions.

Regular MMCA Seoul hours are 10:00–18:00, extending to 21:00 on Wednesday and Saturday. In addition to its holiday closures, the Korean visitor page lists temporary closures on September 8 and December 1, 2026. These dates were absent from the English page when reviewed.

Example plan: make the National Palace Museum your morning attraction, take a meal break, and add one MMCA exhibition if it fits your interests and ticket availability. Allow for outdoor travel between the buildings. If the rain clears, decide whether to resume the palace visit using its last-admission time. The Changdeokgung Secret Garden is an outdoor, timed visit, so substituting it does not solve the same weather problem.

Yongsan and Ichon: National Museum of Korea

Choose the National Museum of Korea when you want a substantial history-and-art anchor rather than a short shelter stop. Visit Korea describes collections spanning Korean history, art, and culture. Select the galleries that match your interests and leave the outdoor grounds for suitable weather.

The permanent galleries are free; paid special exhibitions are separate. The Children’s Museum requires a reservation, even though admission is free. A family planning that particular experience should arrange its session before building the day around it. Official visitor information

Regular hours are 09:30–17:30, or 09:30–21:00 on Wednesday and Saturday, with admission ending 30 minutes before closing. Holiday closures include January 1, Lunar New Year’s Day, and Chuseok. The permanent and special galleries also close on the first Monday of March, June, September, and December; March 2026 was excepted. September 7, 2026 is consequently a gallery closure day.

Use Ichon Station, served by Line 4 and the Gyeongui–Jungang Line. The museum’s directions describe both the Exit 2 approach and Museum Nadeulgil, an underground passage from the station. That passage helps with part of the approach; the museum grounds and every onward connection should not be assumed to be indoors.

Example plan: visit the permanent galleries, pause for lunch, then choose either more galleries or a separately ticketed exhibition. This keeps a Yongsan/Ichon day in one area. If replacing a planned Namsan outing, make the switch before heading up the hill and route directly to Ichon.

Samseong and COEX: library plus an optional aquarium

Starfield Library is the low-commitment option inside COEX Mall. The operator lists free access and hours of 10:30–22:00. The tall bookshelves, reading spaces, and open interior make it a distinct stop even if you are not shopping. It is a public space within a mall, so plan a look around and a break rather than promising everyone a quiet reading seat. Official library information

For a longer ticketed attraction, SEA LIFE COEX, Seoul Aquarium is in the same mall. Its official ticket page distinguishes admission from optional paid experiences and makes tickets valid for the selected date. Choose the correct party and ticket category; compare the final total rather than a calendar’s lowest displayed price.

The aquarium lists 10:00–20:00, last entry 19:00, with year-round operation subject to operational changes. Its hours differ from the mall and library. Aquarium opening hours

The mall’s directions describe a direct connection from Samseong Station, Line 2, Exits 5 and 6. Example plan: enter the mall, see the library, eat, then visit the aquarium if you want to purchase admission. Keep any temple or outdoor neighborhood walk optional.

Save the chosen facility in your map app and review subway connections before leaving. One confirmed indoor anchor and a meal break are enough to give the wet part of the day a clear direction.
