Choose for your hotel, not just for Seoul Station
For a hotel near Hongik University Station, start with AREX All-Stop. For a hotel near Seoul Station, compare both AREX services. For Myeongdong, compare rail with a Line 4 connection against an airport bus stopping near your hotel. These are starting points for a route search, not promises about the quickest option at every arrival time.
Save your full accommodation address and check whether your flight arrives at Terminal 1 or Terminal 2. The neighborhood name alone is not enough: your hotel may be closer to a different station or bus stop than another hotel in the same district.
Understand the two airport trains
| Service | Where it takes you | Ticket and published train time |
|---|---|---|
| AREX All-Stop | Intermediate stations including Hongik University and Gongdeok, then Seoul Station | Transit card or single-journey ticket. Airport T1–Seoul: 59 minutes; T2–Seoul: 66 minutes, with some trains taking longer. |
| AREX Express | Seoul Station, without the intermediate city stops | Separately purchased ticket and assigned seat. Airport T1–Seoul: 43 minutes; T2–Seoul: 51 minutes. |
These are operator-published station-to-station times. Immigration, baggage collection, the next departure and the hotel connection add time. See the All-Stop service details and Express service details.
Do not enter an Express boarding area assuming your ordinary transit-card balance is an Express reservation. The operator lists Express customer centers in the B1 transportation center at both airport terminals. Confirm the train, departure and seat shown on your ticket.
For All-Stop travel, station machines sell single-journey tickets. If using a prepaid transit card, have enough stored value for your journey and follow the All-Stop signs. A foreign bank card and a Korean prepaid transit card are different products; our subway guide explains ticket and payment choices.
Example: your hotel is near Hongik University Station
- Save the actual hotel entrance in your map app and confirm that Hongik University is the useful station.
- At your airport terminal, choose All-Stop toward Seoul.
- Get off at Hongik University / Hongdae-ipgu / 홍대입구.
- Follow the exit route for your accommodation, checking elevator options if carrying bags.
The AREX route map places Hongik University on All-Stop and shows connections to Line 2 and the Gyeongui–Jungang Line. Express skips this station, so taking it simply because it sounds faster creates a different onward journey.
This example ends at the station. A hotel marketed as “Hongdae” may still require a walk or another ride. Save that last part before leaving the airport.
Example: your hotel is near Myeongdong Station
- Search your airport terminal to the hotel’s exact address.
- If the selected rail route uses Seoul Station, take the appropriate AREX service there.
- Follow the station’s Line 4 transfer signs, then confirm the platform direction for Myeongdong on the route display.
- Exit at Myeongdong using the hotel approach saved in your map.
AREX lists Line 4 as a Seoul Station interchange, and Visit Korea identifies Myeongdong Station as Line 4. Expect an interchange rather than assuming the airport train arrives at your final platform. An Express ticket does not by itself pay for that onward subway journey.
For a bus comparison, the airport’s official route search lists 6015 for Myeongdong Station. Open the route details for your terminal and check the actual stop, fare, departure and walking connection before buying. This is a route to investigate, not a claim that it serves every Myeongdong hotel or runs at your arrival time.
When a bus or taxi fits the trip better
A bus is worth comparing when its stop is close to the hotel and it removes a difficult station transfer. Record the route number, boarding terminal, destination stop and operator. Allow for road traffic; compare the total cost for your party rather than one person’s fare.
For taxis, use the airport’s designated taxi boarding guidance. Show the Korean address and confirm vehicle capacity and the fare basis before loading bags. A larger party with several suitcases needs to check both seats and luggage space.
Keep a late-arrival fallback
Check the remaining services after allowing for immigration and baggage collection. A flight’s landing time is not a train boarding time. If your selected service has finished, use the airport’s current late-night transport guidance or its designated taxi arrangements.
Keep four details accessible: where to board, where to get off, how to pay and how to reach the hotel entrance. The travel apps guide helps you save that information; the trip checklist keeps the task beside your other preparations.
